Areas of Conflict • Israel & Palestine between the State of Israel & Palestinian people who want the Palestinian State restored. Main reasons for the conflict: • The Jews and the Arabs both regard the same area as their homeland. • Israel occupied much of Palestine after WWII. • The Palestinians want their homeland back. • Israel will only give it back if the Palestinians agree to Israel having the other land. Areas of Conflict • Kashmir A conflict about making Kashmir part of Pakistan rather than India. • When Britain left India in 1947 Muslims moved to the North and the East to create Pakistan and Bangladesh. • • The ruler of Kashmir was Hindu and did not want to become part of a Muslim State. Kashmiri rebels are still fighting to make Kashmir into a independent Muslim state. For some Christians, these are the reasons for a Just War …. e.g – arguing over wills -jealousy over success -arguing about moral issues -relationship disagreements -who should my son/daughter marry? -money issues Reconciliation = bringing together people who were opposed to each other Forgiveness = the act of stopping the blaming of someone and/or pardoning them for what they have done wrong Forgiveness • Christians believe it is their duty to try to bring reconciliation between families and friends who are in conflict. • It is a Christians duty to forgive those who attack them – as mentioned in the Lord’s prayer. • However there are some conflicts over morality or religion which a Christian might not be able to resolve e.g If parents argue a Catholic son should not become a priest. Islam and forgiveness Islam teaches that Muslims should try to resolve conflicts and forgive those who cause them offence. God is compassionate and merciful to sinners so Muslims should do the same How can Muslims ask forgiveness on Judgement Day if they have not done the same The Qur’an says that Muslims should forgive. Muhammad said in many Hadiths that Muslims should forgive. Reconciliation Bringing people together who are opposed to each other. Christians believe they should forgive those who attack them because • Jesus died on the cross •Jesus told Peter to forgive many times. •St Paul said that Christians should try to live a life of peace.
