Why are they different colors?
• Stars are classified
according to their color
temperature:
Red stars are the
coolest
yellow stars are
hotter,
white stars are
hotter yet
blue stars are the
most hot.
Star Sizes…
• Supergiants: VERY LARGE! 100
times larger than our sun!
• Medium Sized: OUR SUN
• Dwarf stars: about half the size
of Earth
What is a Light Year?
• Astronomers use a unit of
measurement called the “Light
Year” to measure distances
between the stars.
• Distance that light travels in one
year. Its about 9.5 million million
kilometers. That is not a typo! 
