of belief in Islamic teaching on
the nature of humans as khalifah

What is khalifah?
A khalifah is a servant of Allah who is a custodian or steward of the world for
Allah.
Taking care of the world is very important for Muslims it effect the way they
look at the world around them and reminds them that;
• The world belongs to Allah
• Allah gives people (especially Muslims) responsibility for taking care of the
world for his pleasure.
• They have a duty to look after it and make sure it is used properly.
• They must not allow it to be misused.
• they must give Allah an account of what they have done to make Allah’s
world a better place in which to live.
Why is it important to Muslims?
• According to Islam it helps to clear the
relationship between humans and Allah.
• Humans are second only to Allah in the order
of creation. Human beings are clearly not
‘masters of the universe’. Only Allah is the
master of the universe alone.
One reason why Muslims believe they are given
this responsibility is because of one of the
teachings of Quran.
In this teaching the first human being according to
Islam was Adam(as).
• Allah appointed Adam as a first khalifah.
• He was to pass on this responsibility to all the
people he came after him.
• ‘Behold, your Lord said to the angels:“ I will create
a vicegerent on earth…’’’ (Surah 2:30)
