Class #5
Reading Assignment for Class #6
on 3/29 is Chapter 10 – Islam
***
On Good Friday tomorrow or Easter this Sunday,
I highly recommend that you attend a church service
honoring this significant Christian holiday. If you
would not normally go to a service in your own
denomination, you may wish to consider attending a
service of a DIFFERENT denomination, e.g.
http://countrysideucc.org/about-us/worshipschedule/holy-week-at-countryside. Your experience
there would be a good subject for your reflective
essay on Christianity.

Class #5
Class Presentation Assignments & Due
Dates for Reflective Essays
1) Judaism is due on 3/31. Emilie & Eddie.
2) Christianity is due on 4/12. Cody & Whitney
3) Islam is due on 4/19. Carleigh & Obaid
4) Buddhism is due on 4/26. Haley & Emily
5) Hinduism is due on 5/5. Zack & Randi
6) Confucianism is due on 5/10. Morgan & Lucas
7) Indigenous Religions is due on 5/12. Jared & Katie
Of the SIX topics (excluding your presentation topic),
everyone must turn in FIVE reflective essays due on
the particular date for the topic. You may choose
which five topics that you wish to do. However, they
must be turned in on this schedule.
Reflective Essays
The essay should be at least THREE full
pages based on 12 point type and 1” margins.
Essays that are not at least the required length
will suffer SERIOUS grade degradation. In
it, you must identify a key / essential element
of the particular worldview and discuss what
it is, what is the history or tradition for it, the
reasons or the purpose that it serves in the
religion, how it compares or contrasts to at
least one other worldview, and finally, discuss
your personal reaction to it.
Class Presentations
Every student either individually or with a
partner will make a class presentation on their
assigned worldview per the schedule given. I
will be expecting each individual presentation
to last approximately 30 minutes with
discussion. Going over that is fine. Less than
that, I might doubt how prepared you were.
Partnered presentations will last about one
hour. Using powerpoints are not necessary,
but probably a good idea, but you may be
creative, as appropriate.
Class Presentations
What I am expecting each presenter to do is to
present new material on the worldview that
“goes beyond” or “in more detail” than what
was in the text or the guest speaker’s
presentation so that we can probe issues at
more depth. Ask yourself “What questions do
I have that have not been answered? “ and
then research it and present your findings to
the class. All class members are
RESPONSIBLE for having read the text and
thus be familiar with the basics of the
worldview so that they can ask intelligent
questions and participate in a meaningful
discussion.

Class #5
Today we will view the movie Honor
Diaries.
WARNING: Honor Diaries is more than a movie, it is a movement to
save women and girls from human rights abuses – around the world and
here in America. In so doing, it discusses some traditional practices in certain
religious communities in a negative light. In particular, it has offended some
adherents of Islam. On the other hand, it has been staunchly defended by
other Muslim leaders. In no way should the presentation of this movie be
misinterpreted as being “anti-Muslim.” Keep in mind that NONE of the
religious worldviews we are studying are immune to abuses of their own
faith as a study of the Medieval Crusades clearly would show about
Christianity.
Class will visit the Hindu temple on April 5th.
