India Timeline
South Asia Unit
The continent of India was made up of different territories and kingdoms.
There were many artists and craftsmen.
Major trade posts were established.
East India Trading Company started to take control.
British Traders were doing very well. Made very good money.
British Queen Victoria was declared Empress over India.
The British were in India and established roads and railways, schools and hospitals.
Famines and uprisings had occurred prior to Amristar Massacre in 1919.
British General ordered an attack on Indians gathered for the festival and
375 Indians were killed. Started major independence movement.
Gandhi became a political leader wanting India’s independence from Britain.
Went to London to peacefully end the colonization, but was not successful
Gandhi led the Salt March to protest the tax on salt.
Started with 70 people and ended up
with thousands over the 250 mile,
three week march. Insisted his
people would be peaceful and not
fight back. Many were arrested and
jailed including Gandhi himself.
India became independent, Gandhi was happy that it happened peacefully,
but was disappointed that is was split into three countries
(East Pakistan – Muslim, India – primarily Hindu, West Pakistan – Buddhist).
Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu radical. Over one million people attended the
funeral
