Finding and Using Rocks
What do you think is beneath all the land and oceans on
the planet Earth?
The Earth is a SPHERE. If you could cut this sphere in half you
would see the four layers that make up the planet Earth.
The Mantle
The mantle is the rocky layer
located under the crust. The
rock in this layer is quite
thick and can be very hot.
The Inner
Core
The core is the ironnickel centre of the
Earth. It is very hot and
under great pressure.
The Crust
The crust is the thin outer layer
of the Earth. This is the layer we
walk on. It is made from a thin
layer of cool rocks.
The Outer
Core
The outer core layer is
made from molten metals
and rock. It is so hot that
it is a liquid.
Using Rocks
The rocks we use are gathered or made in a
number of ways:
Collected from the Earth's
surface
Dug up and quarried using special
digging machines and tools
Made from materials such as
clay in brick-making factories
Rocks can be either natural (part of the Earth), or
manufactured (made in factories).
Look at the rocks below and say whether you think the rocks are
natural or manufactured:
Granite Pebbles
Concrete
Bollard
Slate Roof
Brick Wall
Sandstone
Wall
Concrete Lamp
Post
Breezeblocks
Precious
Stones
Chalk
Clay Chimney
Pots
Rocks can be used for a variety of purposes
What are the rocks being used for in the images
below?

Statue
Gravestones
Monument
Walls
Roads
