Mountains
The highest mountain in the world is Mt.
Everest in the Himalaya. The peak is more
than 8,800 meters above sea level.
There are 4 types of mountains:
1 – folded mountains
2- upwarped mountains
3 – fault-block mountains
4 – volcanic mountains
Examples are the
Rocky Mountains
in Canada & the
Appalachian

Folded rock layers
look like a rug
pushed against a
wall.

Folded Mountains
Form when blocks of Earth’s
crust are pushed up by
forces inside Earth
An example is the
Adirondack Mts in New York
& the southern Rocky
mountains in Colorado
Think of these mountains as
the ones with sharp, jagged
peaks.
Upwarped Mountains
Huge, tilted blocks of rock
separate from surrounding
rocks by faults
The faults are like large
cracks or fractures
The Grand Tetons in Wyoming
are an example of fault-block
mountains; also the Sierra
Nevadas in CA
This process of mountain
building produces majestic
peaks & steep slopes
Fault-block Mountains
Begin to form when
molten material reaches
the surface through a
weak area of the crust
Two examples are Mount
St. Helens in Washington
and Mt. Shasta in
California

Geysers
• The most famous geyser in the world is probably Old
Faithful in Yellowstone National Park. It was discovered
in 1870 by the Washburn Expedition, whose members
stumbled upon the geyser during an eruption. One can
imagine what it must have been like for those early
explorers to see Old Faithful in all its glory. Even today,
seeing Old Faithful erupt is an unforgettable experience.
• On average, Old Faithful erupts about every 92 minutes,
and shoots water 135 feet into the air, but has been
known to erupt as high as 190 feet.
