Biomes
Rivers
Ocean
Biomes – has a specific type of climate,
Flora (plant life) and Fauna (animals).
Rainforest: most biologically diverse!
More plants and animals than anywhere!
Soil is thin
and nutrient
poor because
of all the rain!
Temperate Forest: this is where we live!
We have moderate rainfall. The temperature
and the types of animals vary.
Grassland: many have been plowed for crops
Bison
Grasses
Tundra: Less than 25cm of rainfall per year. Birds
migrate here in the summer to feed off of the
insects.
24 hours of
Daylight in
The Summer
Winters are
very cold!
Savanna: Plants here grow because they
have adapted to fire.
Desert: Has the lowest yearly rainfall. Animal
have adapted to the climate with thick scaly skin so
they don’t loose too much water. They are smaller
And they are active at night.
Microclimate: a climate differs in a surrounding
area. Large cities – mountains.
Mt. Kilimanjaro is close to the equator!
Snow because
Of the high
elevation
Serengeti
River Systems: all the large streams and
Tributaries that run together to form a river.
Placer
deposits
A watershed is an area of land where all
the water (surface and groundwater) flows
to the lowest point – usually a stream, lake or river
delta
Formed in water
Alluvial fan
Formed on land
You will find algae,
bass and plankton
here.
Light is limited
in the profundal
zone.
If the sea level fell 40m, what would be expose?
-Where you will find mud and the
Remains of marine organisms.
Pelagic Zones
Warm, shallow water, dolphins swim here!
Sea mount
This could
become a
volcanic
Island!
Continental Margin
Continental rise
Abyssal Plain
Benthic Zone
Intertidal
I Saw Beluga And Hammerhead
I Saw Beluga And Hammerhead!
I – Intertidal – the tide comes in and goes out.
S – Sublittoral – This is shallow water. You can
scuba dive here. It gets filtered sunlight. You
Could find Nemo!
B – Bathyal – you take a bath with a
sponge! Spongebob lives here!
A – Abyssal – Largest Area! All you see is the
sea!
H – Hadal – this is where the Devil lives! It is
Deep, dark and scary!
What environment is
described as the
environment near the
bottom of the ocean?
Benthic Environment
Which zone would you find sea
stars (starfish), sponges, and
octopi?
Bathyal zone
IN which ocean zone
would you find
dolphins?
Neritic
Which part of the oceanic
lithosphere is covered by mud
and the remains of tiny
organisms?
Abyssal Plain
If the sea level fell by 40 meters
what part of the ocean floor
would be exposed?
Continental shelf
The steeply inclined
section of the oceanic
lithosphere (ocean
floor)?
Continental Slope
Part of the ocean floor
where 2 tectonic plates
move apart and great
mountain ranges are
formed?
Mid-ocean ridges
In which biome do
we live?
Temperate forest
Biome with the most
fertile soil…
Temperate grassland
What are the 2 main abiotic
factors that determine the
type of terrestrial biome
found in a region?
Temperature
and
Precipitation
Which biome is most
biologically diverse?
Tropical Rain Forest
What biome has
extreme day and night
temperatures?
Tropical Desert
What are the characteristics
of the soil in the tropical rain
forest due to rapid decay of
plants and trees?
Thin and nutrient poor
Which biome is most
biologically diverse?
Tropical Rain Forest
What happens to the
variety of flora (plants)
and fauna (animals)
as altitude increases?
The variety decreases
due to low temperatures.
What is know as a nursery
for young fish, where
freshwater and saltwater
mix?
Estuary
What is the percent of salt
found in freshwater?
In saltwater?
Less than 1%,
3%
What ecosystem is based
on salt water?
marine
What determines the
distribution of organisms
in an aquatic biome?
The available nutrients and
sunlight
What does this sign indicate?
That all of the local streams and
rivers eventually flow into Dog
River!
What is an area of land that is
drained by a water system
called?
Watershed
What is an area at the
end of a river where it
drops its load called?
Delta
What is the major
watershed that drains into
Mobile Bay?
Dog River Watershed
What would you call the area of
the ocean floor where 1 oceanic
plate is pushed under another
plate causing huge cracks in the
deep ocean basin?
Trenches
Jenna is the captain of her team
and they are having a hard time
finding the best solution to an
engineering problem. What
should they do to solve the
problem?
Negotiate to reach a
compromise
What do engineers rely on most
to solve problems?
Mrs. Roberts and Mr. Freeland
(Math and Science)
If you are working on a design
and you see that you don’t know
enough about the necessary
science what should you do?
Ask for help from someone who
knows.
