Elements of the Earth
Warm Up Activity:
• Ancient Greeks believed that everything was made up of
four basic parts or elements:
fire
earth
air
water
• Scientists have since discovered at least 90 elements
naturally occurring in the universe.
QUESTION:
Which of today’s known elements do you think the objects
shown above share?
Look at your periodic table and write the chemical symbol and chemical
name of the element.
Common Minerals in the Earth:
Olivine
Pyroxene
Amphibole
Mica
Quartz
These are examples of minerals, which form naturally in the
Earth’s crust.
What do these minerals have in common?
How are they different?
How can a few elements make up so
many different things?
• Minerals have a few of the same elements, but also include
a few different elements, and are in different proportions.
• It’s similar to baking different desserts, where most of the
ingredients are the same (flour, sugar, eggs), but some other
ingredients are different (chocolate, lemon).
