Make certain vitamins our bodies need.
Decompose waste and dead organisms
Cause communicable diseases – can be
passed on from one person to another.
Cause specific diseases in in organs:
◦ Lungs – tuberculosis, pneumonia, diphtheria
◦ Mouth – tooth decay, sore throats
◦ Blood – bubonic plaque, blood poisoning
◦ Genitals- Syphilis, Gonorrhea
◦ Brain - Meningitis
Some (diatoms) used in mild abrasives,
such as toothpaste
Used in water and chemical filtering
systems
Serve as food for other species
◦ Fish, snails and clams
Can cause humans diseases in:
◦ Mouth – Bleeding gums, tooth loss
◦ Intestines – Diarrhea
◦ Blood – sleeping sickness (attacks central
nervous system eventually leading to coma),
malaria (attack red blood cells), black fever
(damaged immune system and facial
disfigurement)
Used as food – mushrooms
Flavor food –blue cheese
Make beverages –wine, beer
Makes bread rise – yeast
Certain drugs made from it – penicillin
Breaks down waste and dead material
Causes food spoilage –
◦ Sour milk and moldy bread
Causes majority of plant diseases
Causes human diseases –
◦ Athletes foot and ringworm
Destroys leather, fabric, and plastics
