Cells
Unit 4
What is a cell?
• Remember, a cell is the basic unit of life!!!
What are the 2 types of cells?
•
There are 2 types of cells:
1. Prokaryotic
2. Eukaryotic
How do I know the difference
between prokaryotic and eukaryotic
cells?
Prokaryotic
Eukaryotic
•Nucleus
•No nucleus
•Very Simple
•Have DNA
•One cell
•Have cell
membrane
•Example:
Bacteria
•Are living
•Very Complex
•Many cells
•Example:
Plants,
Animals,
Fungi,
Protists
There are rules for cells called:
1. All living things are composed of cells
2. Cells are the basic units of structure and
function in living things
3. New cells are produced from existing
cells
What are cells made of?
• Cells have “little organs” that help them
work, called organelles.
When many similar cells come
together…
• When similar cells come together to
perform a specific function it’s called a
tissue.
When tissues come together…
• When tissues come together to perform a
specific function it’s called an organ
When organs come together…
• When organs come together to perform a
specific function it’s called an organ
system
When all the organ systems work
together…
• When all the organ systems work together
it’s called an organism
