Body Organization
Cells
• You already know a TON about cells!
• Is the basic unit of structure and function
• Complex organisms are composed of trillions of
cells
• Each cell has a different function based on
where it is in the body
Tissues
• Tissues- a group of similar cells that
perform the same function
Types of Tissue
Muscle tissue
-allows your body to move by shortening and
stretching out
Nervous Tissue
Nervous tissue
– carries electrical messages back and forth between the
brain and other parts of the body
Connective Tissues
-connects and supports parts of your body
-Bones and fat are connective tissue
Epithelial Tissue
– covers surface of body
and internal organs
– protects whatever is
underneath
Organs
• A structure composed of different kinds of
tissue
• All organs will perform a specific job
• (each type of tissue in the organ will help
carry out that specific job)
Organ Systems
• Each organ is part of an organ system
• Organ system- a group of organs that
work together to perform a major function
Circulatory
System
• Transports materials
to and from cell
throughout your body
Digestive System
• Breaks down food
and absorbs nutrients
Nervous System
• Detects information
from the environment
and controls body
functions
Skeletal System
• Supports and
Protects the body
Endocrine
System
• Controls many body
process by using
chemical reactions
Muscular
System
• Enables movement of
the body and internal
organs
Respiratory
System
• Takes in oxygen and
eliminates carbon
dioxide
Excretory
System
• Removes wastes
from your body.
