What is an IAVS?
It is an Integrated Aqua-Vegeculture
System. An IAVS is a way to grow
food and raise fish together in one
system.
How Does It Work?
First, nitrosomas bacteria was added to
the hydroponic beds. It lives on the rocks.
The nitrosomas bacteria is responsible for
breaking down the ammonia in the fish
waste. The ammonia is broken down into
nitrite.
Then nitrobacter bacteria breaks down
the nitrite to nitrate.
The nitrate is the plant food for the
plants.
Germination Table where the seeds begin
to grow. The seeds grow here for 3 weeks.
This is where the Bibb lettuce is planted. It
is grown hydroponically. It is not part of
the IAVS system.
After plants have been growing in the
germination table for 3 weeks, they are
transplanted to the hydroponic beds.
We are raising tilapia. This type of fish was
chosen because they can live in a wide
variety of water conditions.
Here students are looking after the tilapia
in the large fish tank.
Here we planted Romaine lettuce, Bibb
lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers.
So, what is the best part of an IAVS?
Getting to eat the food!
