Overcrowded Houses
There was a huge demand for iron which
meant factory owners within walking
distance of factories. These houses were
badly overcrowded, families lived, ate and
slept in one room.
During the 1860s in Glasgow court a man
saw “A mum, dad, 3 kids & 4 pigs in one
cellar.”
Diseases Typhus Disease
• Since conditions were so poor, it meant that disease could spread
easily. Diseases such as Typhus Fever and Scarlet Fever. You get
Typhus fever from bacteria carried by lice, due to overcrowding.
Symptoms include:
• Backache
• Dull red rash that begins on the middle of the body and spreads
• Extremely high fever (105-106 degrees Fahrenheit)
• Hacking, dry cough
• Headache
• Joint pain
• Nausea
Scarlet Fever
You get Scarlet fever from harmful bacteria spreading in overcrowded areas. Symptoms
include :

• Overall, living conditions were bad for
many years but did improve as time went
on.
