birth, which is the basis for the Anno Domini
system of dating, has been determined by
modern historians as having occurred
between 7 and 2 BC. The date of celebration
is not thought to be Jesus' actual date of
birth, and may have been chosen to coincide
with ancient Roman solar festivals that were
held on December 25.

Lunar New Year
the Spring Festival
The origin of the Lunar New Year Festival
can be traced back thousands of years,
involving a series of colorful legends and
traditions. One of the most famous legends is
Nian, an extremely cruel beast that the
ancients believed would devour people on
New Year's Eve. To keep Nian away, redpaper couplets are pasted on doors, torches
are lit, and firecrackers are set off throughout
the night, because Nian is said to fear the
color red, the light of fire, and loud noises.
To the ancient times period, there
is a kind of fierce monster called“
year”. Its facial look is ferocious,
the born nature is bloodthirsty,
eating the birds and beasts, the
fish and shellfish insect without
feet particularly
.
• The Spring Festival, also known as the
Chinese New Year. To Chinese people it is
as important as Christmas to people in the
West. The festival actually begins on the
eve of the lunar New Year's Day and ends
on the fifth day of the first month of the
lunar calendar. But the 15th of the first
month, which normally is called the
Lantern Festival, means the official end of
the Spring Festival.

• At New Year’ s Eve, all the family members will
come back home, and all the families will have a
big feast. There are all kind of meat on the
dining-table, and the fish is a must, which means
“Every year has surplus.” And sometimes we
even put up the tail of fish on the wall. And

• On the New Year’ s morning, we often eat dumplings and
eggs, which means earn more money in the next year.
On this day, people should say blessing to each other,

• The 15th day of the first month of the lunar
calendar remarks the end of the New

The conclusion:
The differences between Spring Festival
and Christmas are so obvious that we can
find easily. First the background is
different. One is the eastern festival, and
the other is western festival. Then the
people celebrate them in different ways,
such as China does not have Santa
Claus, and America does not have any
couplets. At last, east and west eat
different food to celebrate the festival.
