The 6H Loo Crew Breaks the
Poo Taboo
On Monday 22 February Grade 6 had
a visit from Lift the Lid, an organisation
that deals with sanitation and water
borne diseases worldwide. This is what
we learned.
• 2.4 billion people have no safe
and clean place to go to the toilet
• The majority of these people live
in Asia, India, Africa and South
America
• This is a problem because 1 gram
of faeces can contain 10 million
viruses, 1 million bacteria and
one hundred parasite eggs.
• Washing your hands stops diarrhoeal
diseases by 40%
• Proper disposal of children’s faeces
reduces childhood diarrhoea by 40%
• Women and children suffer the most as a
result of poor sanitation
• Girls miss school due to bad sanitation
due to embarrassment
• 5000 children die each day
from diarrhoea caused by
poor sanitation and unsafe
water
• The world health
organisation estimates that
90% of these children could
be saved by prevention and
better treatment
• Children supplying water for
their families miss school
• Where there is no other option,
children must go to the toilet
out into the open
• Water must be boiled before
drinking and even then it is not
always safe
• A school sanitation program in
Bangladesh has increased the
school enrolment of girls by
11% per year
•
•
Living without water and sanitation traps
whole communities in poverty
Children do not just die of poor sanitation
but also of dehydration without clean
water
• Half of all schools in India have no toilets
• In every fourth high school girls have to
share toilets with boys
• The percentage of schools in India with no
water or toilets is declining over time –
that’s GOOD!
• The main water and sanitation related
disease can be divided into three groups
– Diarrhoeal disease
– Diseases caused by worms
– Water borne diseases
• Rotavirus kills over 600,000 children per
year
• Cholera is a bacterial disease that can
cause large epidemics killing the young
• Scabies occurs in areas where there is a
lack of water and people are unable to
wash themselves, bedclothes or houses
regularly.
• Bacterial dysentary is caused by Shigella
bacteria in contaminated drinking water,
food or flies and between people
• The biggest factor in sanitation diseases is
flies! A simple pit latrine in an enclosed
building is very effective, because it
prevents access by flies.
• How much does this cost?
• A mere $200
Here are some things we would like to do
this year:
