Communicable Diseases
A disease that is spread from one living
thing to another through the environment.
Causes
Pathogen- an organism that causes
disease.
Viruses
Bacteria
Fungi
Protozoans (single cell, more complex than
bacteria)
Rickettsias (similar to bacteria)
Transmission
Direct contact- contact with infected
person, animal or something in the
environment.
Indirect contact- contaminated objects,
vectors (such as a tick), or through water
and food that has been contaminated.
Prevention
Wash your hands!
Safe food preparation and handling food
properly.
Take care of your body, especially your immune
system.
Sensible eating
Plenty of rest
Exercise
Avoid substance abuse
Avoid sexual contact
Update your immunizations
Prevention
Immunity- being protected against a
particular disease
Active immunity (exposed to antigens)
Passive immunity (antibodies from another
person or animal)
Vaccine- preparation of a dead or
weakened pathogen that is introduced into
the body to stimulate an immune response
