Our Aim:
To find out what antibacterial properties
different condiments have.
What We Predicted:
We predicted that Ketchup would be the
condiment with the most antibiotic
properties, out of the 3 condiments (Sweet
n‘ Sour Sauce, BBQ Sauce and Ketchup)
tested. Because it is made out of tomatoes
which have to fight bacterias during
growth.
How we did it:
We prepared plates containing agar jelly
and a nutrient broth with bacteria in it.
Then we placed paper disks dipped in
condiments, paper disks dipped in an
antibiotic solution and plain paper disks
(as controls) inside the bacteria colonies
and left overnight in an incubator.
Expecting for there to be an aura around
the disks representing bacteria being
inhibited.
The Results We Got:
After having left the samples overnight and
removed them from the incubator there
were no visible auras around the paper
disks. Showing that none of the
condiments used had any antibiotic
properties.
Evaluation:
This experiment was a failure, as none of the
condiments used showed any antibiotic
properties. Yet these results can be explained
through several limitations in the experiment.
The plates were old and several of them
covered in mold, this might have caused the
bacteria to have died, therefore not making it
possible for any substance to have given
positive results. We were also used as guinea
pigs by the teacher (Ms. Bickle) to try out the
new type of antibiotic substance, which might
have influenced the likelyhood of the
experiments sucess.
Example of a sucessful Sample
(Sarah Schroths)
Example of an unsucessful Sample
(Ours)
- Clear and visible auras around paper
- No visible auras at all
- Clean Sample
- Sample full of mold
- Full coverage of area
- Paper disks crammed in small area
between mold spots
