Fast reading
Para.1 Fleming was excited about his
discovery, which he called
Penicillin, but other scientists
showed no interest.
Para.2 Penicillin played a very
important role during World
War Ⅱand at present as well.
Para.3 Fleming discovered a mould
that can kill bacteria by
accident.
Para.4 Health care in the past was
often dangerous and risky.
Para.5 Alexander Fleming invented
many ways to treat the
wounded during World WarⅠ.
Careful reading
Retell the life experience of Fleming
and how he discovered penicillin.
Alexander Fleming was a young
doctor in the early 1900s when a
German chemist developed a chemical
treatment to cure an incurable disease.
Fleming began using it in his clinic.
Then in 1914, he had to go to the
battlefield to treat wounded soldiers
during World WarⅠ, when he
invented many ways to treat the
wounded. After returning from the war,
he went on with the search for the
chemical because he believed it could
treat infections. One day, he found a
mould was growing in some old glass
containers. To his surprise, the bacteria
he had been growing had died. He
believed that it was the mould, which
later he called penicillin that killed the
bacteria. Penicillin was a great
discovery. It played a very important
role during World War Ⅱ and as well
as at present time. Fleming was
awarded Nobel Prize for his great
discovery in 1945.
Alexander Fleming
discovered Penicillin
Note
It was not until after the war that he
made his most important discovery.
(P80)
此句包含了一个强调句型,其结构为
“It is / was +被强调部分+ that / who +
句子的其他部分”。这里需要注意的是
当强调not ... until结构时,须将not
until一并放在强调部分,后面接肯
定句式。
e.g. It was not until yesterday that I
got your letter.
It was not until at that time that I
realized what trouble he was in.
Post-reading
Ex. 2 on P81:
SA: I think confidence, carefulness,
and perseverance are the most
important characteristics that
help Fleming discover penicillin.
If a person has no confidence,
he will do nothing. Fleming
believed that there must be a
chemical curing soldiers’ wounds,
just because of this belief, he could
work hard and tried his best to
discover it. Second, when you do
something, especially do a
search, you should be extremely
careful. If Fleming had paid no
attention to the glass containers,
he would not have found the
mould. Third, no one can achieve
anything without hard work.
Fleming worked on the problem
for many years, if he had given
up after some time, he would
never have discovered the great
chemical.
SB: In my opinion, except the three
characteristics you mentioned just
now, the sense of responsibility is
also very important. As a doctor,
his responsibility is to cure their
patients at any time. If Fleming
had had no sense of responsibility,
he wouldn’t have spent so many
years for the research for
penicillin.
SC: I think intelligence is the most
important one. If a common
person does the research, he will
not discover it.

Florence
Nightingale
She is remembered as a pioneer of
nursing and a reformer of hospital
sanitation methods. For most of her
ninety years, Nightingale pushed for
the reform of the British military
health-care system.
Main idea
Para. 1 (Para 1): Fear had gripped
the nation when
SARS broke out.
Parts 2 (Para 2-7): Thanks to the quick
and forceful action
the country took
and the sacrifices
the health care staff
made, SARS ended in
the summer of 2003.
Part 3 (Para 8): We will never forget
the “Angels in White”.
Ex.6 on P215
Policemen, firefighters, miners, pilots,
soldiers, sailors, ...
A: I think policemen have the most
dangerous job because there are
many people who break laws in
modern times, and most of
them are cruel. The duty of the
police is to arrest them. So they
must face great challenges and
danger. Many policemen were hurt
and even died. So I think policeman
is the most dangerous.
B: I think working in the mine is the
most dangerous job. We can see
nowadays many accidents happened
in the mine. And each time, many
people die. So I think miners have the
most dangerous job.
