STD’s: The Silent Epidemic
 STD’s
is considered an
epidemic amongst teens and
young adults
 Many STD’s are Asymptomatic
meaning “showing no signs of
a disease.”
 STD’s
that are asymptomatic
can only be detected by lab
tests.
 If STD’s go untreated a person
can become infertile, seriously
ill, or even die.
 If sexually active get tested
regularly.

in 10 teenagers is infected
with an STD.
 Sexually active teens 1 in 5
have an STD.
What puts Teenagers at High Risk?
 Being
Sexually Active
 Having more than one partner.
 A partner that had multiple
partners.
 Alcohol and Drugs
How are STD’s Spread?
 Any
type of sexual activity in
which body fluids are exchanged
and skin to skin contact.
 Direct contact with open sores
 Mother to her baby before birth,
during birth or during breast
feeding.
Myths on the Spread of STD’s
 Most
of the viruses and
bacteria can’t survive outside
of the human body.
 STD’s can’t be spread through
kissing, holding hands, or
using public toilets.
STD’s Caused by Bacteria
 Chlamydia

 Trichomoniasis-
Symptoms: Females- itching,
discharge, painful urination.
Males-usually no symptoms
Treatment: Prescription

Untreated: Bladder and Urethral

 HPV
Symptoms: Often no symptoms
or genital and anal warts.
Treatment: No Cure
Untreated: Cervical Cancer,
Genital Cancers

Symptoms: Simplex 1- cold
sores. Simplex 2- red bumps,
blisters and recurrent sores,
and fever.
Treatment: No cure
Untreated: Newborns can have
infections in the liver, brain,
skin, eyes, and mouth.
 Hepatitis

Symptoms: yellowing of the
skin, loss of appetite,
darkening of the urine.
Treatment: No Cure
Untreated: Liver damage, liver
failure, or liver cancer
