THE WORLD OF
LIVING THINGS

Where Do Living Things Come
From?

Hundreds of years ago people believed that
living things came from nonliving things, such
as clothing, rocks, or food. This was known as
spontaneous generation.
Ex. Flies arose from rotting meat
Worms came from rocks
Moths came from clothing
Fransesco Redi & Louis Pasteur
the 1600’s Redi, an Italian doctor, helped
disprove the idea of spontaneous generation.
 In
the mid-1800’s Pasteur, a French chemist,
designed experiments that rejected the idea
of spontaneous generation.

Where Do Living Things Really
Come From?
Living things come from other
living things through:

REPRODUCTION
What Do Living Things Need To
Survive?
WATER
FOOD
LIVING SPACE
HOMEOSTASIS
(internal balance)
What Do All Living Things
Have In Common?
 Cellular
organization
 Contain similar chemicals
 Use energy
 Respond to surroundings
 Grow and Develop
 Reproduce
CELLULAR ORGANIZATION
Living things can be:
–Unicellular (A single cell)
*Bacteria
–Multicellular (Many cells)
*Protists
*Fungi
*Plants
*Animals
SIMILAR CHEMICALS

Water (most abundant)

Carbohydrates (main energy source)

Proteins (building material)

Lipids (building materials)

Nucleic Acids (genetic material)
USE ENERGY

To repair injured or damaged
parts and to move chemicals
around your body.

To digest food

To physically move
RESPOND TO SURROUNDINGS
Stimuli – change in
temperature, light, sound,
proximity
 Response
to stimuli
– action or behavior due
GROWTH
AND
DEVELOPMENT
Growth = getting larger
Development = changes during lifespan
REPRODUCE
 To
produce offspring
similar to parents.
