The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research
Council
We are the main UK government agency for funding
research and training in engineering and the physical
sciences
We invest around £800 million a year so the UK will be
prepared for the next generation of technological change
WHY INTERNATIONAL?
“International collaboration is important if the UK is to stay
at the leading edge of world science and innovation and
benefit from the 90 per cent of the world’s scientific output
that is produced elsewhere.”
The Race to the Top
Lord Sainsbury, October 2007
EPSRC Overarching Vision
“Our vision is for the UK to be the best place in the world in
which to engage in research and innovation.”
“For the UK to be equally renowned for knowledge transfer
and innovation as it is for research discovery.”
…while maintaining research
excellence and quality

INTERNATIONAL FUNDING
What we DO fund:
UK-resident academic employees of eligible institutions (mostly UK
Higher Education Institutions)
Travel and subsistence costs for UK partners at all stages in
international research collaborations.
International networking activities (UK T&S and UK core meeting costs)
What we DON’T fund:
Your collaborator overseas’ research or any investigators working in
Universities outside the UK.
WRITING YOUR PROPOSAL
Would your proposal stand up on its own without the collaboration?
How will the collaboration work? Management of the link, use of travel
funds…
Added value of collaborating: what makes your chosen partner so
special? What will they add to the research?
Detailed letters of support from your collaborators
Memoranda of Understanding (if held)
Track record of any previous collaboration
DOUBLE JEOPARDY
Double jeopardy occurs where a joint research project is seeking
funding from 2 agencies.
Issues occur where the peer review is independent and out of
sync.
What are we doing?
Agreements with agencies in USA, Japan,
China and India.
Memoranda of Understanding or ERA/ESF
activities.
Specific calls for proposals.
Collaborations with Japan
EPSRC currently fund grants worth a value of approximately
£28 million that have a named Japanese collaborator.
Examples of research themes include:
ICT
Photonics
Electronics
Energy
Nanotechnology
