One of the themes in this book is
independence. It is a theme because when
Running Deer ran away, Earth Woman was not
too sad that he was gone. She was happy that
he was free and happy once again. Another
theme is kindness. The Indians were so kind
to Molly that she did not want to leave them
when she had the chance.

Summary
Mary Jemison, also known as Molly, is
happy with her family, unaware that not too
far away, Indians are planning to attack her
village. As she, her family and neighbors make
a run for it, Indians soon catch up. They take
Molly, Davy Wheelock and Nicholas Potter
with them. As the three of them reach Fort
Duquesne, a white man camp, Molly is taken
captive with MORE Indians and goes to Seneca
Town with them. (Continued on next slide)
Summary (Continued)
There, she finds out the two women’s names,
Shining Star and Squirrel Woman. She also
soon learns that Squirrel Woman can be so
mean and how Shining Star could be so nice.
That night, she meets Red Bird, Shining Star
and Squirrel Woman’s mother. Red Bird offers
Molly a food that has no taste. Molly also
meets a little dog who likes her. Plus, she gets
here Indian name, Corn Tassel. (Continued on

Summary (continued)
Molly is not so happy about living with Indians
until she meets Little Turtle, a young Indian boy who
wants to help her. After meeting Little Turtle, she
soon meets little Blue Jay, Shining Star’s baby. At
first, she did not like Blue Jay, but now she loves him.
Molly even saved Blue Jay from a rattlesnake. Later,
Josiah, another white captive came into the Seneca
tribe. But, that did not last too long. He ran away
and was never seen again. Molly misses him, but she
keeps being an Indian. One day, a white man comes
to try to take Molly. In the end, Molly decides to be
an Indian, since her family died long ago.
