1.1 Analyze idioms, analogies, metaphors,
and similes to infer the literal and
figurative meanings of phrases.
Idiom:
• Words used in a special way that is
different from their literal meaning.
Example:
My grandpa was 102 years old when he
kicked the bucket.
“Kicked the bucket” is an idiom
that means “died.”
Ivan the bobbing idiot could only talk in idioms!
“It’s raining cats and dogs!”
“I’m seeing red!”
“Don’t put the cart before the horse!”
“Curiosity killed the cat!”
“Turn over a new leaf!”
“You’re stuck between a rock and a hard
place!”

Analogy:
• A comparison based on resemblance or
showing a relationship.
Example: An arm on a person is like a branch on a tree
because both are connected parts of the larger whole.
Sometimes analogies are stated like this:
Branch is to tree as arm is to person.

Simile:
• A figure of speech that compares two
things using words of comparison such as
like or as.
• Example: The dog danced around like
loose litter in the wind.
“Dog” is being compared to “litter in the wind” which
helps the reader to understand its movements.
Metaphor:
• A figure of speech that compares two
things without using a word of comparison
such as like or as.
Example: The cup of hot tea was the best medicine for
my cold.
“Tea” is being compared to
“medicine.”
