Mitosis and Cancer
The Cell Cycle

Under normal conditions instructions in a
cell’s DNA control its rate of cell division.

Suicidal Tendencies: A cell may destroy
itself it something has gone wrong or if the
genetic information is damaged.
Cell Cycle Gone Wild!

When cells begin to divide uncontrollably
the result is cancer.

Cancerous cells interfere with surrounding
cells and disrupt the normal functioning.
Mitosis Mishap

Cancer cells continue to divide indefinitely.

They are stuck in the mitosis part of the cell cycle;
always dividing without replicating and preparing
the cells DNA.

The result is more and more cells with altered
DNA that are no longer able to function properly.

Why is Cancer Dangerous?

In some cases the excess cells can form a lump,
or tumour.

In other cases the cells travel to other areas of the
organism.

These cells gobble up oxygen and nutrients and
crowd out normal functioning cells robbing them
of food.

All cancers are caused by mutations in the
genes that control cell division.

A carcinogen is any substance or energy
that causes such a mutation.
