Stomach Cancer

Definition: Cancer that forms in tissues lining the
stomach. Also called gastric cancer.

Estimated new cases and deaths from stomach
cancer in the United States in 2009:
New cases: 21,130
Deaths: 10,620

This is a disease that mostly affects older
people. The average age at the time of
diagnosis is 71. Almost two thirds of people
with stomach cancer are older than 65. The
risk of a person developing stomach cancer
in their lifetime is about 1 in 112, but it is
slightly higher in men than in women.

Stomach cancer is much more common
worldwide, particularly in less developed
countries.

In 2004, there were 803,000 total deaths from
stomach cancer. Making it the 2nd most
common cancer to die from. (1st is lung
cancer)
Signs of Stomach Cancer





Abdominal Pain and Discomfort
Persistent Nausea and/or Vomiting
Loss of Appetite
Feeling Excessively Tired
Losing Weight Without Trying
How to check?



The doctor will give you an endoscopy
Take out a small piece of the stomach to
check for cancer cells
The sample will be sent to a lab to determine
whether it is cancerous
How is it treated?

Treatment for stomach cancer may include
surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or a
combination of these treatments. The choice
of treatment depends on whether the cancer
is just in the stomach or if it has spread to
other places in the body. A person’s age and
overall health will also affect the choice of
treatment.
Who is at risk?







Are a man
Are older than 50 years of age
Have a close relative who has had stomach cancer
Smoke cigarettes
Abuse alcohol
Are an African American, Hispanic American, Asian
American or Pacific Islander
Have stomach polyps (small growths in the lining of
your stomach)
Can you prevent it?

There is no way of preventing it. However,
you can help reduce your risk of getting
stomach cancer by not drinking a lot of
alcohol or smoking. Also, eat a diet high in
fresh fruits and vegetables, and make sure to
get enough vitamin C.
Survival

When detected in a late stage, the 5-year
survival rate for Stomach Cancer is low.
However, every case is different so patients
with Stomach Cancer should not base their
chances of survival on stats alone. The
seriousness of this disease must be kept in
mind, but there are always new treatments
that may offer hope.
