November is now known as “Movember” and this is a foundation that is the
leading global organization committed to changing the face of men’s health.
The campaign involves men signing up and shaving their face on November 1st
and then growing a moustache to become a “Mo bro” and raising funds to
support the event based on the looks of the moustache. The women that
support them are known as “Mo Sistas”. Two cancers are the focus of men’s
health issues and they are testicular cancer and prostate cancer.
A man has a 1 in 270 chance in a lifetime of being diagnosed with testicular
cancer and the average age at diagnosis is 33. A man has a 1 in 7 chance in a
lifetime of being diagnosed with prostate cancer and the average age at
diagnosis is 66. It is however, the second leading cause of cancer death in
American men second only to lung cancer.
Speaking of lung cancer we also need to remember and mention that
November 20the is the Great American Smokeout sponsored by the American
Cancer Society. It is a day to promote the end of tobacco use which ultimately
will decrease the incidence of lung cancers as well as some head and neck
cancers.
To find out more about these and any other cancers go to www.cancer.org
