Screening for Colon Cancer
By Adam Anderson
Statistics
▪ Colon cancer is the third most common form of
cancer in the United States.
▪ 60,000 Americans die every year from the
disease.
▪ However, the survival rate is over 90% for
cases detected in the early stages.
▪ According to the American Cancer Society,
30,000 lives could be saved each year if everyone
over 50 was screened on a regular basis.
Screening
▪ Colon cancer is highly treatable when
discovered early, but only 14% of individuals at
risk are currently screened on a regular basis.
▪ Many reasons contribute to this low number of
participation:
▸ Inconvenience and discomfort of the tests.
▸ Lack of awareness of the threat of the disease.
▸ Belief that the disease just won’t affect them.
Get Screened
▪ The American Cancer Society is curently
running a series of television advertisements to
educate people on the isssue.
▪ The ad campaign is also targeted at doctors.
Patients would be more likely to participate in
screening if their doctor suggested it to them.
▪ Everyone can help with this problem, just urge
your friends and family members who are at risk
to be screened.
The Air Quality
Do you know what you are
breathing?
By Susan
Albro
Why care about air?
A lot more cancer
Death rates would go up
A lot more chemicals into our bodies
Effects the natural world
Killing off fish
Acidic soil
Polluted water
To learn about air in Shepherdstown
• The Environmental agency for West Virginia
• News
• Get children more interested in it at school
How to protect you and environment
You
Environment
Air purifier
Drive less, walk when
you can
Do not go out on bad
air quality days
Keep air quality
standards for WV, high
Do not go out in middle
of day
In the homes use more
renewable resources
Stay out of fog
Radon
The unknown cause of lung
cancer
What Radon is..
• Invisible, odorless, tasteless radioactive
gas
• Radon decays to emit alpha particles,
which cause the actual cancerous growths
• Naturally occurs in all soil
Facts on Radon
• Radon is attributes 19,000 deaths each
year
• Jefferson County exceeds the average
national number of deaths from radon by
21%
• Jefferson County has 68% higher
concentrations of radon in homes than
national averages
Jefferson County at high risk…
• Historic homes are more likely to have
cracked foundation
• Geological Survey data shows a
correlation to radon exposure and cancer
in this area
• Soil permeability and moisture holding
content
Radon seeps into homes…
• Cracks occur in foundations
• Radon seeps in through cracks and other
areas that are not sealed well
• Radon occurs in high concentrations in
well sealed homes
Radon is easily fixed…
• Short term and long term tests are easy to
perform
• Homes can be ventilated
• Cracks in foundations can be fixed
• Sump pumps and drain pipes can be
adequately sealed
Next year’s participation…
• Participation is crucial
• Next year’s class could form their own
team to raise money for the American
Cancer Society directly, or
• Be directly in charge of a specific activity
during the event such as activities for
participants or survivor reception
coordinators
