What is Child Soldiering?
Child soldiering is the military use of children.
Not only are the children used for spies and
cooks, but also fighters, suicide bombers, and
even human shields.
Where does children soldiering
happen?
More than eighty-five
countries are known for
children soldiering. Forty
percent of the worlds armed
organizations have children
in their ranks. Human Rights
Watch is currently estimating
that 200,000 to 300,000
children are serving as
soldiers for both rebel groups
and government forces in
armed conflicts.
Involvement
It is often assumed that child soldiers are just boys,
but that is not true. Approximately thirty percent of
all child soldiers are girls. Children are highly wanted
for war because they are easily persuaded. Some
children are forced to fight, while for others, its there
only option.
Punishment
Children are brutally
punished during war, not
only by fighting, but also by
their leaders. If a child does
not march correctly he is
punished by being whipped
numerous times. Children
are not always punished
physically but sometimes
sexually. Children soldiers
have suffered from
harassment or even have
become rape victims.
Sometimes children are even
killed as a punishment.
Death of Children Soldiers
Over the last ten years 200 million children have been killed due to being soldiers
of war. Children of war not only suffer from permanent physical damage but also
ever lasting emotional damage. Being forced into war affects every aspect of a
child’s development. Children of war are often separated from their families and
internally displaced. These children become refugees and orphans.
Prevention
Child soldering should be
prevented not only because
it rips away childhood but
because it treats children
inhumanly. These kids never
have the opportunity to have
a life due to death or
emotional damages caused
by war. Children forced into
combat are deprived of the
opportunity to make
decisions for themselves.
War is not for children.
