…you REALLY need to know about RSS
What is it? (part 1)
It’s this –
or sometimes
And it stands for Really Simple Syndication
But you don’t really need to know that…
“An RSS file is a small text file that provides a
concise summary of the content of a web page”,
Burks Oakley II
Which is more than you need to know..
What is it ? (part 2)
What you do need to know…
It’s a mechanism by which new content is delivered to your desktop
You ‘subscribe’ the RSS
RSS is revised every time the website is updated – new content
or edited
In other words RSS lets you know there is new content
(it’s free)
Example
What does this mean?
You can get the latest updates for:
Websites (in. StudyNet modules)
Blogs – new entries (Tim Wilson)
Wikis - new content/pages & CHANGES
Podcasts – latest weekly audio
RSS Feed Aggregators
Stores your RSS subs
Let’s you know when new content is added
Desktop – SharpReader
Web based – www.bloglines.com
Email versions on the way
