Domain
Suffix
What It Means
.com
company (also used by many magazines and
newspapers)
.org
organization (used by many museums and nonprofit
groups)
.edu
educational institution (a college or university)
A site’s web address shows up in search results.
When you go to the site, it appears in the browser.
What other domain suffix types have you seen?
Think carefully about who posted the information
• If the site represents an
organization, is it
trustworthy?
• If it doesn’t represent an
organization, who is
running the site?
• Can you tell who put the
information on the site?
Does it have an author’s
name? Credentials? Or is
it an anonymous post?
Make sure the information is accurate
Use a reliable site.
Look for author information.
Check the date.
Compare to other trusted sources.
What trusted sources could you use to double-check information
you find online?
You may find a broken page or be redirected to a
new site
Reasons for broken
pages:
• An organization
moves its website to
a new web address
• The page no longer
exists
• The page has been
hacked
Why are 404 pages or getting redirected a reason for caution?
Some sites might try to steal your information
Be careful about:
• Sharing personal
information like your
name, passwords, email
address, phone number,
or mailing address
• Downloading anything
to the computer
How can you tell if a site is secure?
The Internet is an amazing resource. Use it wisely!
• You have access to more
information than students
have had at any time in the
history of the world!
• Be careful to use trustworthy
websites.
• Protect your personal
information.
• Take basic precautions and
stay safe online!
