Michael Gorman Presents
A Mini Power Point
Seven Steps To Effective Web
Site Evaluation (A-G)
STEP A
Introducing The ABC’s of
Web Research
Along with the
DEFG’s
The Seven Steps To
Web Site Evaluation
FACTS AND CONTENT
Is the information good information?
F. Facts And Content
Verify Info (Find two – three other sources)
Grammar (Sentence structure, wording, spelling)
To the Point or Vague (Is it concise?)
Good flow (Does the article read well?)
Verify Information
• are facts and content in resource correct
• find other websites or resources to verify info
• include scholarly sites, data bases, and hard copy
• use information that verifies info as citations
Proper Grammar
• use web sites that are properly written
• poor grammar may also mean poor information
• good info… bad grammar… find another site
To The Point
• site must be clear, concise, and to the point
• do not accept a website that is vague
• avoid web sites with needless words
• vague may indicate bias or lack of research
Web Example
F. Information Found On Web
Christopher
Columbus
Live Link
1. Christopher Columbus was born in Sydney, Australia.
2. He is buried in Valladolid, Spain.
Are these stated points really true?
F. Checking These Facts With Google
Born in
Sydney,
Australia?
Three sites say
Genoa, Italy
Buried in
Valladolid,
Spain.
Finding where Columbus is buried is much
harder than where he died.
Watch from live link. Look for video title below
F. Different Google Results
October 12, 1492: Juan Rodriguez Bermejo, a
sailor on the Pinta, shouts, “Land, Land!”
Columbus later claims he first spotted land and
thus will collect the lifetime pension promised.
Who first saw
America
on the
Columbus
voyage?
Live Link
F. Vague Or Clear
Live Link
CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS discovered America in 1492. At least that is what
all elementary school children were always taught: "In 1492, Columbus sailed
the ocean blue." Of course, Columbus never did "discover" North America, and
the regions he did explore were already inhabited
Live Link
Christopher Columbus was a master navigator and admiral whose four
transatlantic voyages (1492–93, 1493–96, 1498–1500 and 1502–04) opened
the way for European exploration, exploitation and colonization of the
Americas.
Top link is more colorful, but is more vague and
not as specific and to the point as the second.
F. Grammar Is Important
Explorer, navigator, Columbus was born in 1451,
in the Republic of Genoa (Italy) to the son of a
weaver. Columbus first went to sea as a teenager,
participating in several trading voyages in the
Mediterranean and Aegean seas.
Christofer Columbis was a great explorer who was
born in 1451 in Genoa, Italy to the son of a weaver
who encouraged his sun to goto see as a
teeneager and made shure he traded voyages in
the Mediteranian and Again Sees.
Grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and
flow of article are important!
F. Facts And Content
The Website must:
Be accurate and be able to be verified
Contain proper grammar, spelling, sentence structure
Get to the point
Have good word flow
