Web sites best support 7th grade student research?
How can Citation Machine be used to help students cite
sources easily and accurately?

Teaching
Google Search for Circulatory System
What makes a good Web site for 7th grade student
research?
What Makes a Good Web Site for 7th Grade Research?
 Reading level is appropriate for grade
level.
 Site content covers 7th Grade Scope
and Sequence.
 Site offers interactive components,
audio/visual components, or both.
How can we narrow our search in order to find more appropriate Web
sites for student research?
The more keywords you enter, the more specific your search
will be.
Using quotation marks allows you to search for phrases
instead of specific keywords.
Guided Practice
What phrases or keywords can we enter into Google to
come up with Web sites appropriate for middle school
students?
Narrowing Our Search & Saving Our
Results
Let’s see what will happen if we enter the following into the Google
search engine:
“Circulatory System” Kids
“Circulatory System” “Middle School”
Citing Internet Resources
Citation Machine is a great Web site that you can use to cite
resources in a document.
How can we use Citation Machine?
(Citation Machine.ppt)
Here’s a document that we can save our citations in.

Work Time
Search for a subject that you will be teaching.
Evaluate your search results based on the criteria we
outlined.
Make your search more specific with more keywords and
quotation marks. Did you get better results?
Create citations for your best Web sites, save them to a
document, and develop focusing questions for your
students to complete when they visit the site.

In this session we learned how to narrow Internet searches to find Web
sites that are appropriate for 7th grade students, and how to easily
cite these Web sites.
Could some people share:
 Their initial search terms.
 The sites found and the appropriateness of these sites
for student use.
 How did you narrow your search?
 Which Web sites you found this time and why these
sites were more appropriate for student use.
 Did you have any difficulties using Citation Machine?
 What focusing questions you might use to help
students learn core content from these Web sites?
