•
URL is another way of saying ‘web address’.
There are at least 3.5 billion websites in existence.
Although there are billions of websites, each one has
a unique URL.

though?

Hypertext Transfer Protocol
•
•
•
http:// appears at the beginning of all URLS.
Hypertext Transfer Protocol is the set of rules
which enables a computer to read a web page.
Sometimes it contains an ‘s’ – https:// The ‘s’
stands for secure. You should always look for
this when paying for goods online.

www – World Wide Web
•
www stands for ‘World Wide Web’. All websites used to
include this, but nowadays some companies choose not to.

Domain type
• The letters immediately after the company name show the domain
type. This can give us information about who made or owns the
website.
• For example:
.org is an organisation. Charities and other not-for-profit companies use
this.
.co is a company (not American).
.me is a domain type designed to be used for personal websites.

•
We can usually tell where a website originates from these two
letters.
.fr
.br
.ie
.es
.de
France
Brazil
Ireland
Spain (España)
Germany (Deutschland)

Path to file or resource
•
•
•
Everything that comes after the country type refers to
the page within the website that the URL is pointing at.
In the example above, the path is /cartoons. This
means that this URL is for the page on the BBC website
which contains cartoons.
The path is normally separated from the site’s domain
name with a / (forward slash).

Domain name
•
•
The next part of a URL is the website’s domain
name.
Domain names have to be bought. Once a person or
organisation has bought a domain name, no one
else can use it because each URL has to be unique
(meaning the only one!).
