LITERACY
D’Abate 2011
WHY do we study
media literacy?
This resolution grew out of awareness among
educators that understanding the new media and using
them constructively and creatively actually required
developing a new form of literacy-new critical abilities
"in reading, listening, viewing, and thinking" that would
enable students to deal constructively with complex
new modes of delivering information, new multisensory
tactics for persuasion, and new technology-based art
forms.
GPS
ELA4LSV2 and ELA5LSV2:
The student listens to and views various forms of text and
media in
order to gather and share information, persuade others, and
express and understand ideas.
When responding to visual and oral texts and media
(e.g., television, radio, film productions, and electronic media),
the student:
a. Demonstrates an awareness of the presence of the media in
the daily lives of most people.
b. Evaluates the role of the media in focusing attention and in
forming an opinion.
c. Judges the extent to which the media provides a source of
entertainment as well as a source of information.
What is Literacy?

How can we extend these
concepts beyond our
classrooms?
1. Survey students – what different media do
they see and hear at home?
2. Inform parents of our study of media
literacy.
3. Students can bring in examples of printed
materials, share websites they visit, etc.
4. Ask students to create their own examples.
