The internet is a great way to find information,
keep in touch and have fun.
To connect to the internet, you have to ‘go online’.
To get online you’ll need the following:
•A computer
•A broadband modem / router
•A phone line
•A broadband internet service from an ISP
(Internet Service Provider)

ISPs provide the service that connects
your computer to the internet.
There are lots of ISPs and lots of different
service levels for ‘light’ and ‘heavy’
internet users.
ISPs and comparison websites can help
you choose the service that’s right for
your needs.

The modem / router connects you to
the internet through your phone line.
Most now allow your computer to
connect wirelessly. If you have a
laptop, this means you can go online
wherever you are in your home or out
and about in cafés or cinemas.

You view web pages using an internet
browser program on your computer.
Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google
Chrome are the three most popular
web browsers.

Every web browser has the same features:
•An address bar. This shows the unique web address of
each web page you visit. Type a web address here, then
press ‘Return’ to go to that page.
•Forward and Back buttons. These let you move
between web pages that you have recently visited.
•A Homepage button. This returns you to your
homepage – the first page your web browser shows when
it starts.
•A search bar. Enter text here to search the internet.

A web address has different parts.
Make sure you know what they mean so
you go to the websites you want!
www.samsung.com
samsung.com is a‘domain name’.The
same domain name can have different
endings, such as
.com
.org
.net

The same domain can be used for different
websites, each with a different ending.
Some websites use this to pretend to be the
‘real’ site, but are there for other reasons.
This might be to spread a computer virus,
or to show unsuitable content.
If you're not sure which domain ending you
need, ask for help.

Web pages contain text, images,
animations and video.
You move from one web page to the
next by clicking on web links.
Your cursor will change from an arrow
to a hand when it’s on a web link.
Web links can be text, buttons, or
even photos.

Some web links let you download
things from the internet, such as
documents or printable versions of
web pages.
You’ll find these in the ‘Downloads’
folder on your computer.

Some web pages are too big to fit on
your computer screen.
Use the scroll wheel on your mouse to
scroll up and down long web pages.
You can also click on the scroll bar at
the side of the web page window.
