You view web pages using an
internet browser program on
your computer.
Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer and Firefox
are two web browsers.

Every web browser has the same key features:
An address bar. The shows the unique web address of
each web page you visit. Type a web address here then
press ‘Return’ to go to that page.
Forward and Back buttons. These let you move between
web pages that you have recently visited.
A Homepage button. This returns you to your homepage,
the first page your web browser shows when it starts.
A Search Bar. Enter text here to search the Internet.

Web pages contain text, images,
animations and video.
You move from one web page to the
next by clicking on web links.
Your cursor will change from an arrow
to a hand when it’s on a web link.
Web links can be text, buttons, or
even photos.

Some web links let you download
things from the Internet, such as
printable versions of web pages.
You’ll find these in the ‘downloads’
folder on your computer.

Your ‘homepage’ is the web page that your browser
first opens.
Depending on your browser, set your home page by:
•clicking on the arrow by the homepage button
and choosing ‘Add or change homepage’
Or…
•Entering your browser’s ‘preferences’ or ‘settings’
menu when on the page you want to use.

Save websites or pages that your visit often
by ‘bookmarking’ them in your browser.
Press CTRL + D to bookmark a favourite site.
You can put bookmarked websites in your
bookmarks or favourites folder, or on a
toolbar above your browser window.
Organise your favourites by putting them
in sub-folders.
This saves scrolling down a long list!

Tabs let you view more than one
web page at a time.
To open a new tab, click on the small
tab to the right of a web page’s tab,
or press CTRL + T
Move between tabs by clicking on
them or pressing CTRL + Tab

Sometimes a web page will not load
properly. Some images may not appear,
for example.
Click on the ‘refresh’ button at the righthand end of your browser’s address bar.
This will load the page again.

Your history folder keeps a record of every
web page you visit. You can find pages you
visited up to two weeks before.
Open your folder by:
•clicking on your ‘Favourites’ button
and then on the ‘History’ tab
Or…
•Clicking on the History menu.
Then click on a date range and web page.

your history folder.
Right-click on a web address
in your history folder and then
choose ‘Delete’

You can delete all your browsing history, for
example if using a public or shared computer.
Depending on your browser,
Click on ‘Safety’ and then ‘Delete browsing
history’, or
Click on ‘Tools’ then ‘Clear recent history’
and then select how far back you want to go.

using zoom and text size.
To zoom in on a web page, press
CTRL and +
To zoom out again, press CTRL
and –
When zoomed in, use the scroll
bars at the side and bottom to
scroll around.

Increase the text size to make web
page text easier to read.
Click on ‘Page’ then ‘Text size’ to
choose, or
Enter your browser’s ‘Preferences’

Some websites have ‘pop-up’
windows that may distract you with
adverts when browsing.
Make sure your browser’s pop-up
blocker is on.
Do this using your browser’s ‘Tools’,
‘Settings’ or ‘Preferences’ menu.

Cookies are tiny bits of data that many
websites store on your computer.
Sites use these to remember you next time
you visit. Some use them to show you
adverts on other web pages, based on your
browsing history.
To increase your privacy, you can control
what cookies are stored and for how long.
Do this by keeping your security and privacy
settings on ‘medium’ or ‘high’.

research, you can find words or
phrases on each web page you visit.
Press CTRL + F to open the ‘Find’ tool
and type what you are looking for. This
will highlight these words on the web
page, making them easy to find.

called ‘plugins’ or ‘add-ons’ to make the
Internet more exciting. These help show
active content like videos and animations.
A website may prompt you to download
a plugin to view some content.
Only download plug-ins from
reputable websites.

Adobe Reader – to read PDF documents
