Evaluating Web sites (cont.)
• Your tutors will require you to use a variety of
sources and primarily you should be using
academic sources. For example books, journal
articles and other resources that are available

Wikipedia
Great if you want to know something quick for
personal use!
But its unreliable and your tutors won’t want you
to use it in your assessments or seminar work as
it’s not an academic source
Anyone can go on and edit the pages and add
anything, it may be a while before it is noticed
and corrected

Tips to consider when using web sites
• Authorship
 Who wrote the web site or information on the
web page? Are they an expert, well known
company?
• References
 Have they used any references you check
their work- follow up sources they have used?

• Currency
 How up to date is the information, when was
the website last updated?
• Purpose
 Is it written with any bias? This can be hard
to tell but some company websites for
example will only produce positive information
about themselves

Finally…
Any material you find used MUST be rewritten in YOUR OWN WORDS and you must
acknowledge your sources – failure to do
this is plagiarism and is considered serious
academic misconduct.
