Content Management System Overview
What is a Content Management System
(CMS)?
-
A system used to manage the content of a Web Site
-
Typically consists of two elements;
- Functionality that allows the content manager or author, who may not
know HTML, to manage the creation, modification, and removal of
content from a web site without needing the expertise of a webmaster
- Functionality that publishes content to a web site

Content Management System Overview
What is are the benefits of a CMS?
-
Alleviates ‘Web Group/Publications bottleneck’ by automating tasks and
shifting ownership of content to departments
-
Allows individuals to produce and store content through form based web
tools.
-
Allows individuals to create pages through wizards, including the ability to
specify how the page will look and what content it will contain.
-
Allows for content re-use. One piece of content can be published to multiple
locations. Changes to that content will be reflected in those areas of
publications.
-
Indexing, search and retrieval. Content can be parsed for keywords,
headings, graphics, and other elements.
-
Provides version control. Content can be updated to a newer version or
restored to a previous version.
