Employing Technology to Achieve
Program Objectives
Santa Ana College Program Example
Six Steps to Success
Small Group Discussion
Employing Technology to Achieve
Programs Objectives
OBJECTIVE 7: Strengthen English Language and
Composition Skills
 The technology component developed at the
beginning of the fall 2001 semester included English
tutorials and study skills building.
 SSS participants had access to student computers in
the SSS office and also had an opportunity to borrow
laptops for a total of a two-week period each time,
enabling them to research material for their English
classes and submit professional, typed material.
 Description of Laptop Component (Binder)

Getting Started
Six Step Process
Small Group Discussion
Getting Started: Step 1 - Plan
Develop a technology integration plan
Contributes to program objectives
Promotes active learning for students
Get computers into the hands of students
Reflects your vision for your program
Examples
Santa Ana College
Suggestions from the class
30
Getting Started: Step 2 - Personnel
Build your knowledge base
Directors “own” and “share” the vision
acquire the knowledge yourself or secure a
resource person with the knowledge (could
be a TRIO client/student)
“technical” technology skills
“learning” technology skills
31
Getting Started: Step 3 - Partner
Leverage local resources (find partners)
Associated institutions may provide
Space for labs
Fully equipped labs
Internet/e-mail accounts for students
Technical support for equipment
Technology training for staff
Matching funds for any grant money received
32
Getting Started: Step 4 - Hardware
Purchase
quality equipment first
Consider laptops for lab & loan
Consider wireless for outreach
Sample Configurations
Standard Configuration
Pentium M Processor (4)
1.6 GHz
256K RAM
DVD-CDRW Combo
30 Gig hard drive
32MB Video Card
17” monitor
Minimum Configuration
Pentium M Processor
1.40 GHZ
256K RAM
DVD/CDRW Combo
30 Gig hard drive
32MB Video Card
15” monitor
33
Getting Started: Step 5 - Software
 Microsoft Office suite common, not required
Word for Word Processing
Excel for Spreadsheets
Access for Database
Powerpoint for Presentations
FrontPage for Web Development (or Netscape
Composer)
Internet Explorer for Web Browser (Netscape
Navigator)
Outlook for E-mail (or Netscape Messenger)
 Free stuff at http://www.cnet.com
34
Getting Started: Step 6 - Access
Consider school and home access
Dial-up modem access - slower
Cable modem / DSL – faster, but more
expensive
LowerMyBills.com
http://www.lowermybills.com
35
Small Group Discussion Questions
 How can online technology tools be used to help you
achieve the program objective that you identified prior
to coming to the seminar?
 What other ways can only technology tools be used
to enhance your program’s -- Instructional services?
 Tutoring services?
 Counseling services?
 Other?
 How can the 6 steps helps you to get started with
using technology to achieve your program’s
objectives?
