What is
Parkinson’s
Disease?
Parkinson’s /ˈpɑːr.kɪn.sənz/ is
an genetic disease that
occurs later in life. It is
caused by a mutation in
your genes. It is incurable,
but can be treated. It was
discovered over 7000 years
ago in Ancient India. It was
first formally recognized in
1861 by a French
neurologist named Jean
Martin Charcot.
What Does
Parkinson’s Do?
There are over 200,000
cases of Parkinson’s a
year. Parkinson’s is a
disease that attacks
the brain. Parkinson’s
affects your
movement. As you
walk, your steps
become closer and
closer together and
one of your hands is
always tremoring.
Families vs.
Parkinson’s
If a loved one of yours
has Parkinson’s, you
are responsible for
caring for them and
you have to help them
with almost everything.
It’s hard to take time to
yourself when your
loved one needs
constant help. The truth
is the whole family has
to deal with it.
Signs of
Parkinson’s
Some signs of
Parkinson's are trouble
sleeping, hunching
over, and a masked
face. A masked face
means you have little
to no facial expression.
Do you have
Parkinson’s?
If you suddenly have a
loss of smell, small
handwriting, low voice,
and dizziness/fainting,
you should talk to your
doctor. The doctors use
tests like a CT scan,
MRI, and blood tests.
Names for
Parkinson’s
Parkinson’s is also know
as
•
PD
•
Shaking Palsy
•
Paralysis Agitans
•
Primary Parkinsonism
Specifics
Parkinson’s is a
neurodegenerative
disorder. A
neurodegenerative
disorder is a disease
that has incurable
conditions that result in
progressive
degeneration and/or
death of nerve cells.
How Do You
Get
Parkinson’s?
Parkinson’s can be
inherited, but in most
cases it is found as a
genetic mutation. If it’s
inherited, both of your
parents must have the
Parkinson’s gene.
Treatments of
Parkinson’s
Parkinson’s cannot be
cured by any known
treatment today. You
can have surgery in
your brain and take
some medicine to
help, but it will not cure
the victim. Gene
therapy is possible for
patients with
Parkinson’s.
Past
Treatments
In Ancient India, they
used a tropical legume
called Mucuna Pruriens.
Mucuna Pruriens seeds
are a natural source of
restorative quantities of Ldopa.
