Spider Silk
Spider silk is extremely strong. It is
has tensile strength greater then steel
and is more flexible.
A 747 Boeing jet could be stopped in
flight by a strand that is pencil thick.
This fiber is ultra light, about 25%
lighter then traditional polymers.
Spider Silk Cont.
elastic modulus 10-50 GigaPascals,
and has tensile strength of 1.1-1.4
GPa
The silk is safe to be used to replace
humans body parts giving the user
wider range in motion then the
traditional replacements available
today.
Problems with Spider Silk
It is extremely difficult to create Spider
Silk on a commercial scale
Nexia, a Canadian company is hoping
to create an unlimited supply of Spider
Silk in goat milk.
Nexia has cloned a goat with spider
genes.
Webster and Pete
Webster and Pete are the
first goats who have this
gene.
When they mate their kids
are hoped to produce milk
which has the silk protein.
The “silk milk” from the
goats will then be used to
create fibers known as
Biosteel.
