The Mystery of People
 To be a person is to be a physical-spiritual creature
made in the image of God.
 Our ability to know and love, our concern for good and
evil, and our freedom are human capacities that are
Godlike.
Essentials of People
 To be a person is to live in a relationship with other
people. It is an essential part of our human nature to
live in a community with others.
 First Nations were the first to live in communities on
the land here in Moose Jaw.
 Together we can all learn about relationships, love,
friendship and cooperation
Essentials of People

never know everything there is to know, including
knowing ourselves. But we can try!

 What has changed?
 What has stayed the same?
 How will things change in the future as you become a
young adult?
Heredity
 In every cell of the human body
there are 46 chromosomes
arranged in 23 pairs.
 Along each tiny chromosome lie
genes, or genetic traits (the
colorful bands shown here )
 It is estimated that there are over
1 million genes in each cell of the
body.
Heredity
 Genes determine:
 Physical characteristics







Hair color
Skin
Eye color
Body build
Facial features
Height
Blood type
Heredity
 At the time of
conception 23
chromosomes from the
sperm, and 23
chromosomes from the
egg come together and
a new life begins.
 23 (mom) + 23 (dad) =
YOU!
 All the genetic
information contained
in the sperm and egg
are passed on to you
Heredity
 Some traits are stronger than others and are more
likely to appear when chromosomes come together.
 For example, the gene for brown eyes is stronger than
the gene for blue eyes.
 Dominant Gene – stronger gene that is more likely to
appear (ex brown eyes)
 Recessive Gene – weaker gene that is less likely to appear
(ex blue eyes)

Gene Assignment
Heredity
 Aside from inheriting physical characteristics you also
inherit:
 Talents
 Personality
 However unlike eye color and blood type, which are
fixed characteristics (if you are a blue eyed person you
will always be a blue eyed person) talents and
personality depend on a few things…
Heredity
 An inherited talent for music, sports or mathematics is
not a fixed characteristics.
 Mother – Teacher
 Father – Hockey Player
 Above are two talents my parents had. This did not
mean I was going to automatically become a teacher,
nor did it mean I was going to become a good hockey
player.
 Talents and skills depend on a variety of factors.
Heredity Assignment
