What are the 3 types of
volcanoes?
Shield Volcanoes
Composite Volcanoes
Cinder Cone Volcanoes
How are the 3 types of
volcanoes classified?
It refers to the life
cycle (active, distinct,
or dormant)
It is classified by the
type it is.
It is also classified by
how it erupts (loudexplosive or quiet.)
How are volcanoes different
from each other?
It depends on how
much volcanic
activity it produces.
It also matters on
what type it is.
Why are the volcanoes shaped
the way they are?
The lava will crack the
surface of the volcano
and the explosions
can change the
shape.
What are the parts of the
volcano?
The side of the
volcano is the flank.
The mouth of the
volcano is referred to
as a crater.
The entrance is called
a throat.
Why do volcanoes occur?
Volcanoes occur when
Earth’s plates pull apart
causing magma to rise to
the surface.
Volcanoes can also occur
over hot spots and where
one plate dives beneath
another, forcing magma
to rise to the surface.
What are Plate Tectonics?
Plate tectonics are
plates that break
apart and push
together deep within
the earths surface.
How do plate tectonics work?
They slide very slowly
apart and together. At
convergent and
divergent boundaries.
Where do most of the worlds
volcanoes occur?
In the Ring of Fire.
It has 452 volcanoes
and is “home” to the
worlds most dormant
and active volcanoes.
How did the Ring of Fire get its
name?
It got its name
because of its shape.
It looks like a
horseshoe shaped
“ring”.
What are hot spots?
A hot spot is a place
where there are
active volcanoes.
EXAMPLES: Hawaii,
Iceland, and
Yellowstone.
What are some volcanic
hazards?
Volcanic Gases are
one of the most
harmful to people,
animals, and
agriculture.
Gases like sulfur
dioxide gas can lead
to acid rain, and air
pollution. It also
harms our o-zone
layer.
What are some tips on
preparing?
Take volcanic emergency
planning workshops
If caught indoors close all
windows, doors, and
vents.
Be sure machinery are in
sheds.
Also, be sure animals are
indoors (such as barns).
What will you find in an
Emergency Kit?
Flashlight and extra batteries
First Aid Kit and Manual
Emergency food and water
Essential Medicines
Sturdy Shoes
Respiratory Protection
(mask)
Eye Protection (goggles)
Battery Powered Radio
About Mount St. Helens
Mount St. Helens is one
of the most active
volcanoes in the
Cascade Range.
Its most recent series of
volcanoes began in
1980.
It erupted when a large
landslide and powerful
explosive created a
large crater.
The U.S. Geological
Survey and other U.S.
scientists continue to
closely monitor this
destructive volcano.
About Mauna Loa
Mauna Loa is located in the
Hawaiian Islands.
Its elevation is 13,679 feet
(400,169 m)
Mauna Loa is dangerous for its
volcanic activity.
Its type is Shield volcano.
Its name means long
mountain.
Mauna Loa’s oldest dated
rocks are 100,000-200,000
years old.
