AIM: What are the effects of air
pollution on the environment
Do Now: What is air pollution?
Explain why it is harmful.
What is Air Pollution?
Harmful substances
released into the
atmosphere.
There are three
types of
pollutants:
1. Natural Air
pollutants
2. Pollutants from
human activity
3. Indoor air
pollutants
Global Effects of Air Pollution
1. Acid Precipitaiton
2. Ozone Depletion
3. Global Warming
Acid Precipitation
Acid Precipitation
• Rain or snow becomes acidic
• Normal rain/snow has a pH of 5.6
What causes Acid Rain?
• burning of fossil fuels
• Rain mixes with gases in the air
• CO2 (carbonic acid) SO2 (sulfuric
Acid), NO2 (Nitric Acid)
What happens when acid starts
to accumulate in lakes?
• Fish die- water is too acidic for
them
• Disrupts the food chain
• Affects the entire ecosystem
Other problems associated with
acid rain
• Damages trees
• Damages crops
• Damages
buildings
Ozone Depletion:
What is the job of the ozone layer?
Protects us from UV radiation
What causes ozone delpetion?
CFC’s
(Chlorofluorocarbons)
• Aerosol cans
•Refrigerator Emissions
• Air Conditioner
Emissions
What is the problem with using
CFC’s?
They create holes in the ozone layer allowing
more UV radiation to reach us
How can UV radiation affect
living things?
•Sunburn, blindness,
skin cancer
•mutations
•Severe crop damage
•Kills aquatic
organisms (disrupts
food chains)
