BIOLOGY IS THE STUDY

• Tune of: Do Wa Diddy Diddy Dum
Diddy Do
BIOLOGY IS THE STUDY OF LIFE
Biology is the study of life
With bacteria, protists, fungi, plants, and
animals.
The cell is the basic unit of life
For bacteria, protists, fungi, plants and
animals.
They reproduce and organize,
use energy and grow, react to stimuli.
Oh, Oh, the autotrophs capture the light
and convert it into food supplies for
everyone.
So sing the kingdoms with me one more time,
that’s bacteria, protists, fungi, plants and
animals.
Prokaryotes are the simplest cells.
A nucleus they do not possess.
Eukaryotes have a nucleus bound in a
membrane making them more complex.
Eukaryotes have organelles.
Prokaryotes are little cells.
Bacteria is all they are those little cells go very
far.
Oh, Oh, the autotrophs capture the light
and convert it into food supplies for everyone.
ORGANIC COMPOUNDS
• Tune of I’ve Been Working on
the Railroad
ORGANIC COMPOUNDS
Organic compounds made of carbon
come from living cells.
Their monomers are linked together
to make them function well.
Proteins are the body builders.
Their enzymes catalyze.
Carbohydrates give the energy
to keep our cells alive.
Nucleic acids have the code,
genetically imposed,
by the order of their nucleotides.
Don’t forget the lipids now
fats and oils they know how
to store energy long term.
Water is an inorganic compound
needed by every living thing.
Water is polar in its nature,
so that’s why all its molecules
cling.
ENZYMES
• Tune of: Row, Row, Row your
boat.
ENZYMES
Enzymes have substrates
which they catalyze.
The active site is where they bind.
They’re very specialized.
Each enzyme will work
with only one substrate.
They drop the need for energy
and increase reaction rate.
Enzymes will break down
when temperatures get high.
pH must also be in range
or enzyme function dies.
The enzyme is like a key.
The substrate’s like a lock.
They fit together perfectly
just like a foot and sock.
CELL ORGANELLES
Tune of : My Girl
CELL ORGANELLES
There’s a membrane
all around the cell,
and what goes in and out
It’s sure to tell.
Mitochondria
they provide the energy for
organelles,
Cell organelles – organelles.
There’s a ribosome, making
proteins for the cell.
And a golgi apparatus
that will package them well.
Endoplasmic reticulum
aids the cell’s transport system.
They’re organelles
cell organelles – organelles.
The plant cell is something unique.
Its chloroplasts, the sunlight they
seek.
The cell wall goes all around
Keeping the plant cell tightly bound
They’re organelles,
Cell organelles - organelles
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Tune of: She’s Got A Ticket To
Ride.
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Photosynthesis is done by
producers.
They absorb the light and become
a food source.
carbon dioxide and water,
with energy from the sun
Enter a chloroplast and sugars
come out.
The light reaction absorbs
photons you see,
And uses them to make ATP.
Carbon dioxide and water
with energy from the sun
enter a chloroplast and sugars
come out.
The Calvin cycle performs the
synthesis.
Storing energy is high on its list.
Carbon dioxide and water,
with energy from the sun,
enter a chloroplast and sugars
come out.
ECOLOGY
• Tune of: When the Saints Go
Marching In.
ECOLOGY
Ecology, is all about,
the interactions that exist,
between the non-living environment
and the organisms on the earth.
Producers, are green plants and algae.
They take the sunlight with its rays,
and convert it into chemical energy,
that consumers eat everyday.
Each trophic level,
Loses 90%, of the energy that exists,
In each lower trophic level
of the energy pyramid.
DNA – RNA - PROTEINS
• Tune of: Three Blind Mice
DNA – RNA - Protiens
Replication, copies DNA.
The Molecule unwinds and
unzips.
Then free bases join at the tips,
to make two DNA,
two DNA.
Transcription, makes RNA
Thymine is no longer a base.
Uracil now takes its place
In a new single strand,
A new single strand.
Translation, is protein synthesis.
Three bases of RNA,
make up the codons that show
the way
for amino acids,
joined by peptide bonds
DNA
• Tune of: Heard It Through The
Grapevine
DNA
Well DNA is what your parents use
to pass their traits on to you.
A nucleotide of DNA
contains a sugar, phosphate, base.
Cytosine and guanine are always there.
Adenine and thymine do their share.
You know they’re working out the gene
code.
Making proteins as your cells grow.
They’re working out the gene code.
The sequence of bases lets your cells
know.
That’s genetics yeah.
