Age-Related Changes in the
Nervous System Affecting Sleep
• Changes may be at the chemical,
structural, and functional levels
– Result in disorganization of sleep
– Cause disruption of circadian rhythms
 Declines in cerebral metabolic rate and cerebral
blood flow
 Reductions of neuronal cell counts
 Structural changes, such as neuronal degeneration
and atrophy
