Leonardo Da Vinci
• One of the best known Renaissance painters.
(1452-1519)
•
Produced the world’s most famous painting: “Mona Lisa”.
•
Said to be the worlds most finest piece of art.
•
Introduced new techniques; such as sfumato.
•
Sfumato - intentional blur of lines.
•
Used in Mona Lisa’s mouth.
•
If you look close enough, you cannot see the corners of her
mouth.
•
Makes her smile more ‘mysterious’.
•
Also well-known for “The Last Supper”.
Michelangelo Buonarroti
(1475-1564)
•

Very well known Italian painter and sculptor in the
Renaissance
Was also a poet and an architect
Painted a fresco that took 4 years to complete
Sistine Chapel one of the world’s greatest works of
art -Over 400 life size figures from Bible.
Also famous for ‘David’ and ‘Pietà’
Van Eyck (1390-1441)
Van Eyck was a flemish painter who invented oil
painting, painting with oil allowed the artist to make
their paintings more vibrant and more fully represent
the real world, Van Eyck painted paintings rich with
color, and attention to detail.
Jean Fouquet
(1416-1480)
• French painter.
•
Illustrated mainly for books.
•
Painted scenes from the Bible.
•
Put individuality into his paintings; mainly visuals from the
Bible.
•
Portrait of Charles III demonstrates use of brittle, incisive lines
in miniature paintings.
•
Established international fame after 1477.

Sofonisba Anguissola
(1532-1625)

Daughter of a very wealthy nobleman from
Verona
Her father encouraged her to paint portraits
Michelangelo praised her portraits for how they
showed the personality of the subject
She ended up being very well known, and even
the Pope had at least one of her paintings
Albrecht Durer (1471-1528)
Albrecht Durer was born in Nuremberg, Germany, and
was well known for his fine wood cuts, and was very
proud and painted many portraits of himself. He used
different shades and lighting to make his paintings
beautiful.
Masaccio
(1401-1428)
•
First painter to use aerial and linear perspective.
•
Only four of his famous frescoes still presently exist.
•
Frescoes: “A painting done rapidly in watercolor on wet
plaster on a wall or ceiling, so that the colors penetrate the
plaster and become fixed as it dries”.
•
First to represent humanism in art.
•
Frescoes characterized scenes of St. Peter’s life.
•
First artist to use early Renaissance style.
•
More natural and life-like.
•
Died at 27; rumoured to be poisoned by jealous artist.
Donatello
(1386-1466)
•
One of the most influential artists from the early Italian
Renaissance
•
Developed unique technique for casting bronze statues used by many artists later on
•
One of most famous works of art was a bronze statue of
David with Goliath’s head at his feet
•
Another famous work of art was a bust of Niccolo da
Uzzano
•
Was the first artist to add a sense of depth to sculptures
Pieter Bruegel (1525-1569)
• Pieter Brueghel was a Flemish Painter who was
considered the first western painter to paint
landscapes as just the landscape in the painting.
New techniques for landscape painting from artists
from northern Europe, later was adopted by Italian
painters
Filippo Brunelleschi
(1377-1446)
•
First to use perspective in his art.
•
Designed octogonal dome of Florence Cathedral.
•
Named it the “Duomo”; completed in 1436.
•
Considered ‘The most impressive engineering feat since
Roman times’.
•
Architecture converted mathematics into art.
•
Octagonal design thought to be motivated by buildings
constructed by Turks in Central Asia.
Pietro Perugino
(1450-1523)
•
Mainly worked in Perugia hence the name
Perugino - real name was Pietro Vannucci
•
Painted on the walls of the Sistine Chapel
•
Used techniques developed by Bruneschelli
to show perspective in his paintings
•
Worked with Botticelli, Domenico
Ghirlandaio and Cosimo Rosselli on the
Sistine Chapel
Paolo Uccello (1397-1473)
• Was an italian painter and mathematician. His real
name is Paolo di Dono, he was an apprentice to
Ghiberti, he got his nickname Uccello from his of
painting birds. Manetti taught him geometry.
