The Physical Chemistry in Practice
DVD – A Multimedia Instructional
Supplement for Physical Chemistry
Gabriela C. Weaver
Purdue University
Goals of the Physical Chemistry in
Practice DVD
Complement the very mathematical and
abstract nature of classroom PChem
instruction with real research applications
Put PChem in relevant contexts
Provide authentic data for student analysis
Include visualizations of abstract or
microscopic concepts.
The Physical Chemistry in Practice DVD
10 programs about current research
utilizing physical chemistry concepts
The research projects have some
application that is tangible to students
The modules include instruction on
modern instrumentation, data analysis,
and applications of the research
The Web-enhanced DVD Format
DVD and HTML can be displayed in the same
viewing environment.
This is the current version of the HTML-based interface:
The DVD plays in the window and can be controlled through this
interface. Other content can also be displayed in this window,
depending on choices made by the user using the menu at the left.

Video Movies
All the DVD benefits:
Broadcast-quality digital video
MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 encoding, and VBR option
(variable bit rate encoding for more complex scenes)
Dolby Digital or PCM Audio
(Pulse code modulation, same as CD-Audio)
Multiple video or audio tracks: multi-language, multi-angle
Multiple subgraphic tracks: graphic overlays, subtitles,
captions, simple animations, turn on/off
Ubiquitous Playback
Set top players, DVD computer drives, portable players
Video Movies
Show science research in action,
being done and explained by the
scientists
Interviews, laboratory procedures,
instruments
Video Example: The AFM in use
Animations
Example: the AFM up close
