ESSENTIAL QUESTION:
How do the structures of the digestive system work
together to process the food you eat?
How do the structures of the excretory system work
together to maintain homeostasis?
OBJECTIVES:
Identify the main functions of the
human organism including the
digestive and excretory systems.
Today’s Agenda
-digestive system Prezi and notes
-color organs in the excretory system
-excretory system notes
A little extra…
-explore www.kidshealth.org
Digestive System Prezi
Prezi link
Play the Prezi on the digestive system and take
the notes on each of the organs in the
digestive system on your notetaking page.
When you are done, raise your hand and have
Mrs. Fillpot check and sign your work.
She will also give you your next assignment.
Excretory System Diagram
• Tape diagram to your comp book
• Color and label organs of the excretory system
using the information on the next slide.
Checking in…
• Your excretory system diagram should now be
labeled and colored.
• Raise your hand to get your next assignment
and for Mrs. Fillpot to grade what you have
done so far.
Excretory System Notes
• Tape notes into comp book
• Follow along with the presentation and fill in both
pages of your excretory system notes.
• When you are done, you will raise your hand and
have Mrs. Fillpot check and sign your work.
The Human Excretory System
Notes
The function of the
excretory system is
the excrete (get rid
of) wastes that are
not helpful to the
body.
Waste
• Wastes that are removed
include carbon dioxide,
water, salt, urea and uric
acid.
• All excreted wastes travel at
some time in the blood.

Skin
Lungs
Liver
Large intestine
Urinary System
Think – Pair – Share:
Can you guess how these
structures are a part of
the excretory system?
Skin
Wastes such as excess
water, salt, urea and uric
acid are removed from
the body in sweat.
Lungs
Excess carbon dioxide
waste is removed
from the body when
we exhale.
CO2
Liver
The liver is a part
of what other
system?
The digestive
system
Liver
The liver has many functions,
including (but not limited to):
1. to produce substances that break down fats
2. produce urea (the main substance of urine)
3. make certain amino acids (the building blocks
of proteins)
4. filter harmful substances from the blood
(such as alcohol)
5. The liver is also responsible for producing
cholesterol. It produces about 80% of the
cholesterol in your body.
The Liver and Waste
• The liver produces
urea and uric acid
as a by-product of
the breakdown of
proteins.
• Urea and uric acid
are sent to the
kidneys to be
processed.
Liver
Large Intestine
• The large intestine
removes solid,
undigested food from
the body after it
passes through the
digestive system.
• Waste is stored in
rectum until it is
excreted from the
body as solid waste.
The urinary system
• The kidneys filter the
blood to form urine,
which is excess water,
salt, urea and uric acid.
• Read about the urinary
system and fill in the
diagram as you go.
Color the organs in the
urinary system as
described in the
directions.
Check with Mrs. Fillpot…
• At this point, you should be done with all
three of the pages Mrs. Fillpot assigned for
today.
• Raise your hand and have her check and sign
your work.
• Tape your work into your comp book.
You have earned free time on the
computer!
• Go to this website...Kids Health, How the Body
Works.
• Explore and play games over the human body.
